Our PFLAG people in the news

From time to time, our local PFLAG chapter and its people are covered in the local newspapers in the Puget Sound area. We will place links to these articles on this page for our members and friends. Let us know if you read or hear of an article that we haven't listed here. Thank you!

PFLAG Skagit advocates in Washington, D.C.

Three members of PFLAG Skagit attended a national convention earlier this month and lobbied Congress in Washington, D.C.

The local chapter is tied to the national PFLAG organization, which held the four-day convention starting Nov. 2.The group, whose acronym stands for “Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays,” advocates and educates for full civil rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

PFLAG Skagit President Kathy Reim, Secretary Colby Rezayat and board member Mike Travis joined hundreds of other PFLAGers from around the country, networking and attending meetings such topics as building safer schools, fundraising strategies and dialoguing about LGBT people in faith communities.

In addition to the convention workshops, PFLAG members were in D.C. to get face time with their congressional delegation.

“Members of our chapter will be meeting with ... representatives to talk about issues ranging from school bullying and hate crimes to gender identity and marriage equality,” PFLAG Skagit Treasurer Michael Bonacci said.

Receiving an award Saturday night at the convention was Betty DeGeneres, mother of Ellen DeGeneres and a longtime PFLAG member.

PFLAG Skagit was founded in 2001 and strives to build community awareness and collaboration. Members recently completed a joint effort with the Theatre Arts Guild and its production of “RENT.”

Using a $5,000 grant from the Pride Foundation, PFLAG Skagit “bought” half the house for a Sunday matinee performance and gave the tickets to high school and college students from Whatcom and Skagit counties. The chapter also provided transportation for the students and treated them to a meal after the show at Pine Square, where they mingled with cast members, producers and other people from the audience.

More information about the chapter can be found online at www.pflagskagit.org.
