Hearts Open to Real Lives: The Science of Gender

Two workshops/community conversations entitled, “Hearts Open to Real Lives: The Science of Gender,” will be presented on Whidbey Island on Saturday, September 14 and Sunday, September 15. These presentations will be held at 3:00 pm at the Langley United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall at 3rd & Anthes, Langley, WA. 98260 on Sept. 14 and at 3:00 pm at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 555 SE Regatta Dr., Oak Harbor, WA 98277 on Sept. 15. These presentations will be facilitated by the Skagit PFLAG Speakers Bureau featuring Linden Jordan, Randi Breuer and Kathy Reim.

This workshop will include basic diversity training and the growing understanding of gender identity.  Diversity Training covers basic terminology, respect and how to be an ally. Participants are encouraged to grow their empathy through humor, exercises and information. The science of gender explores how we have been taught gender is a product of culture. Science is building understanding that gender is more complex. This fascinating presentation expands self-knowledge and builds a basis to understand the world of transgender people. It has received outstanding evaluations by over a hundred local organizations.

These events are hosted by Whidbey PFLAG.

About the presenters:

Linden Jordan’s career has included attorney, mental health counselor and college professor of Psychology.  He is presently retired and serves on the Board of PFLAG.  He is also a member of the Speakers Bureau and presents The Science of Gender to anyone who will listen.  His passion is helping people understand others in a way to encourage openness and acceptance of those whom we might least understand. His booklet, "Why Am I Transgender? Clues from Biology," will be available.

Randi Breuer has worked at the Mount Vernon, WA YMCA and been a member/presenter with PFLAG for 6+ years. They are passionate about supporting the LGBTQ+ population in a variety of ways including their work with the youth at the Y. Randi is currently going to school to finish their bachelor’s degree and is the proud parent of two children.

Kathy Reim was honored to teach young people in the Sedro-Woolley School District for 30 years and worked for Skagit County Mediation Services for six years. She is a PFLAG mom and served 6 years as the PFLAG Regional Director for the Pacific Northwest and with the PFLAG Washington State Council.
